Book of Hawking, Hunting, and Heraldry [Book of St.
Albans]
Portions of the so-called Book of St. Albans are alleged to be the
first printed work written in English by a woman.
Although authorship has traditionally been attributed to Juliana Berners, abbess
of Sopwell in Hertfordshire, more
recent scholarship has identified the probable writer as Julians [sic] Barnes,
the wife of the holder of a manor near St.
Albans. A compilation of treatises on hawking, hunting, and heraldry; this edition
also contains an additional chapter on
angling, or, "Fishing with an Angle," whose title illustration is shown
here
