Composite Daguerreotypes

These two composite portraits of some members of the Princeton faculty were taken during the 1850s.

It is surprisingly difficult to identify all of the individuals pictured in these two group portraits. Of the six in the top portrait we can identify these three: Stephen Alexander at the top left, James Carnahan at the top center, and John Maclean at the bottom center. The man at the bottom left may be John Torrey, and the man at the bottom right may be either John T. Duffield or G. Musgrave Giger.

Faculty identified in this composite portrait include President John Maclean, at the top center, and Professor of Astronomy Stephen Alexander at the bottom left. The man seen in profile at the center may be Alexander Guyot or John Torrey.
